Request a package

We usually ask that a midwife or healthcare provider make the request on behalf of the family. However, we understand that in some circumstances, a friend, whānau member, or the parent themselves may reach out directly.
In all cases, we ask for the name and contact details of a healthcare provider involved in the mother’s care. This helps us ensure our packages — including cocoons — are reaching the right people, and protects the safety and integrity of this free service.

Requesting a Flax Cocoon
If a flax cocoon is needed, please let us know as early as possible, ideally before baby is born or before the family leaves hospital, as these are intended to hold and farewell baby with dignity in those precious final moments.
Cocoons are only available by request to ensure they are used with the care and intention they were created for. Please find more information below.

Eligibility
Our care packages are available to mothers who were:

  •  20 weeks pregnant or more, and

  •  Within three months after birth.

If you’re unsure whether you or someone you know is eligible, please reach out. We are here to walk gently beside you.

Request a Cocoon

Flax cocoons are a gentle and dignified way for families to carry or farewell their baby, based on the original idea by Carole Wheleler and Farewell Cocoons. Each one is carefully shaped from natural flax and lined with a soft, handmade plush mattress — offering warmth, comfort, and respect in a time of deep sorrow.
The cocoons are now available by direct request. This helps us ensure they are offered with care and intention — to honour the life and mana of every baby.
To request a flax cocoon:

  • Please contact us as soon as possible via our contact form, ideally before baby is born or before leaving hospital, so we can get one to you in time. Please include your gestation so we can choose the correct size.

  • The cocoons are free of charge and offered through our baby loss support organisation for any gestation as long as baby can be placed in one.

  • We can also offer gentle guidance on how to use the cocoon during time with baby or for their journey home.

Please note: while these cocoons are made from flax, they are not created in alignment with specific Māori customs or tikanga. We acknowledge they may not be culturally appropriate for all whānau, and encourage families to choose what feels right for them.

If you are a midwife, bereavement support person, or social worker, please reach out to request a cocoon on behalf of a family in your care.

Every baby matters. Every farewell should feel gentle.

If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, do not hesitate to call the Healthline on 0800 611 116 or 111 in case of emergency.
